How do you choose the right forklift?

The range of forklifts on the market is impressive. From compact electric machines to powerful diesel models with a high lifting capacity. But which machine is the best fit for your situation? The wrong choice can lead to unnecessary costs, inefficiency, or even unsafe working conditions. In this blog, we guide you through a few practical points to consider, so you can confidently choose the right forklift for your site, warehouse, or business premises.

1. What do you want to move?

Not every forklift is suitable for every type of load. The weight and dimensions of your goods determine the lifting capacity and lift height you need.

  • Lighter loads up to ± 1,500 kg? Then an electric pallet truck or compact electric forklift is often sufficient. These are energy-efficient, quiet, and particularly suitable for indoor use.

  • Heavier or bulkier goods? Then you need a diesel or LPG forklift with a higher lifting capacity (up to 5,000 kg or more).

  • Specific applications? For example, for stacking goods in high racking, a reach truck or forklift with a triplex mast is recommended.

Tip: don’t forget to also take the load centre distance and the type of pallet or load carrier into account.

2. Indoors or outdoors?

The environment in which you use the forklift also determines the type of drive and tyres you need.

  • Indoor use (e.g. warehouses, storage halls):
An electric forklift is ideal here. It produces no exhaust fumes, is quiet, and is often more compact, which ensures excellent manoeuvrability.

  • Outdoor use (e.g. construction sites, storage yards):
diesel or LPG forklift is usually the better choice here. These are more powerful and better suited to uneven or muddy ground. Choose pneumatic tyres for extra grip.

Please note: hybrid and lithium-ion models are also gaining ground. They combine sustainability with performance, but they are not suitable for every budget.

3. How much space do you have?

The available working space is very important when choosing the right model.

  • Narrow aisles or limited manoeuvring space?
Then you need a compact electric forklift or a three-wheel modelReach trucks are also particularly suitable here thanks to their small turning radius.

  • Open spaces or large storage yards?
There, you can use a larger model, possibly with a higher mast and bigger tyres.

Always make sure the forklift’s turning radius matches the width of your aisles and that you maintain sufficient visibility and stability, especially at greater stacking heights.

4. Rent or buy?

Not everyone needs a forklift on a permanent basis. That is why it is important to carefully consider the duration and intensity of use.

  • Temporary or occasional use?
Then renting is usually the best choice. You only pay for what you need, without maintenance costs or depreciation. At Joris Van Dijck, you can rent from just one day, with delivery to your site and technical support included.

  • Daily or long-term use?
Then buying may be more cost-effective in the long run. We are happy to help you think through a durable investment tailored to your needs, including financing options if required.

Good to know: we also offer top-quality used forklifts.

In summary

Choosing the right forklift starts with analysing your needs: what are you moving, where are you working, how much space do you have, and how long do you need the machine for? Still unsure? Our specialists are ready to help you with personal advice and a tailored solution.
