Warehouse safety: smart segregation, clear signage

Warehouse safety: smart separation, clear signalling with Skipper

Speed matters in a warehouse, but safety matters more. The greatest risks arise where pedestrians and internal transport intersect (forklifts, reach trucks), during temporary work, and around waste and spill zones. With a well-thought-out traffic and signage approach combined with modular Skipper solutions, you make the difference between “it usually goes well” and “it is properly organised”.

1) Separate pedestrians and vehicles (always)

Authorities recommend physically and visually separating walkways and traffic routes: fixed pedestrian paths, markings, (temporary) barriers, and sufficient clear space. This helps reduce speeds, prevents crossings, and makes behaviour more predictable. Skipper’s retractable tape barriers (9 m per unit) on cones or posts make it easy to cordon off zones in seconds, without drilling or construction work.

In practice:

  • Use Skipper units on cones for temporary separation near loading docks or in aisles.

  • Use post-and-base systems for semi-permanent walkways.

  • For indoor use: the compact Skipper XS and wall brackets keep aisles free from loose posts.

2) Make risks visible before they become problems

Clear, consistent signage works. Tape with warning prints (“CAUTION/DO NOT ENTER”, chevrons) and A4 sign holders instantly show what is and is not allowed. Combine this with lower speed limits in busy zones and prohibit walking behind moving forklifts.

Tip: Standardise colours and wording for each type of risk (e.g. red/white = no entry, black/yellow = danger zone) and use the same set everywhere.

3) Manage waste and hygiene as a safety process

Loose plastic film, cardboard, and spills can cause slips and block traffic lanes. With Skipper recycling bins and safety stations, you can centralise waste streams and PPE (earplugs, safety glasses) at fixed points. Add disinfectant or cleaning wipe dispensers to keep work clean and safe.

4) Build in flexibility for temporary work

Maintenance, stock counts, loading and unloading peaks: you need to adapt quickly without creating chaos. Modular barriers with a fast retractable belt and lock function are designed for flexibility on the warehouse floor — robust, weather-resistant, and suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

5) Integrate it into your traffic plan

A warehouse is safe when both the layout and people’s behaviour are right. Embed your Skipper setup into a simple traffic plan:

  • Defined walkways and crossing points with clear sightlines.

  • Loading docks: generous manoeuvring zones, clear stop lines, and temporary barriers during docking.

  • Speed policies and right-of-way rules, communicated through signs and toolbox talks.

Why choose Skipper instead of tape or barriers?

  • Speed & modularity: can be set up, moved, or expanded in seconds (9 m belt per unit).

  • Professional appearance: a uniform system of signs, posts, and bins creates calm and clarity.

  • Cost-effective: one modular system covers many scenarios (maintenance, spills, events, dock areas).
